Orbit explores the idea of a transformable space that allows different furniture modules to be easily swapped in and out of use. The space consists of a main room, three turntables, and a geared outer ring, that work in unison to shift pieces from wall storage to the living area. The outer ring rotates new modules to the turntables, which are then used to rotate the previous module out of and the new module into view. The modules could use reconfigurable or expandable furniture to further utilize the wall storage and maximize space usage. The designed environment could be used in areas with restricted space or supplies, such as large cities, or remote space habitats.
Orbit was constructed from laser cut plywood and acrylic, driven by a set of servos mounted below the main table, and run off of a Arduino based board. The outer ring is a internal spur gear with teeth on the 12 separate components making up the ring, while the turntables pivot room modules in/out of the central space once properly aligned.
Orbit was designed and constructed with Theresa Bracht and Yiwen Sun for the Confined Space project of DEA 6210 Architectural Robotics at Cornell University. Detailed documentation of the project is available here, and full CAD files are available on GrabCAD here.
